Cabrini Immigrant Services Partners with Cabrini Mission Foundation in Aid to Haitian Community
CIS seeks to assist Haitians in US to receive temporary protective status.

Haitian Relief Efforts via Cabrini Immigrant Services

Heeding Provincial Sr. Pietrina Raccuglia’s call to action at the January Cabrini Mission Foundation (CMF) Board of Trustees meeting in response to the earthquake in Haiti, a special Haiti Initiative was established in the Stella Maris Province. Cabrini Immigrant Services Director Christina Baal carries out a critical part of that initiative.

Christina updates the Cabrinian Community on the Haitian situation in the United States:

“In response to the new immigration benefits made available to the Haitian community in the US in the wake of the earthquake, Cabrini Immigrant Services (CIS) will be holding 5 free legal clinics at select community sites that already have relationships with large numbers of Haitians. Clinics will be held once monthly starting early February 2010 through June 2010 and begin with 3 of our Cabrini institutions, Cabrini Center for Nursing and Rehab, St. Cabrini of Westchester, and St. Cabrini Shrine.

“CIS will not only help file the initial applications, but will help community members apply to waive the expensive immigration fees, assist with any follow up paperwork and appointments, and assess families for other immigration needs, particularly those related to reuniting them with their loved ones still living in Haiti.

“The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services estimates that there are approximately 100,000 to 200,000 Haitians nationally who are eligible to apply for Temporary Protective Status (TPS), a status that would allow Haitian Nationals who have been present in the US since the date of the earthquake to live and work in this country for 18 months. The Migration Policy Institute estimates that 70% of the Haitian born (which does not necessarily mean those eligible for TPS) reside in Florida and New York.”

The following have generously contributed to CMF’s Haiti Initiative spearheaded by the efforts of Cabrini Immigrant Services:
• Anonymous
• Sr. Antonina Avitabile, MSC and Sr. Bridget Zanin, MSC
• Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
The overall total of donations to date is $7,720.00

In order to prepare for the demand, CIS is looking for office space; funding to hire additional caseworkers to handle the increased number of cases; and funding for office supplies. If you can help with any of the above or wish to make a donation, please mail checks payable to &quo;Cabrini Mission Foundation&quo; and in the memo write &quo;Haiti Initiative/Cabrini Immigrant Services.&quo;
For more information, please contact CMF at 212-228-8608. Thank you for your interest and support.
