On Saturday, Saturday, January 24, 2010, we commemorate the foundation of Cabrini Health here in Australia. On 24th January 1948, ten Missionary Sisters arrived at Essendon Airport from Italy to assume responsibility for a 45 bed hospital previously conducted by the Sisters of Mercy called St Benedict’s at the invitation of Archbishop Mannix.

We commemorate the 62nd Anniversary of the arrival of the first Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the foundation of what we know today as Cabrini Health.

Like their Foundress, Mother Cabrini, the Sisters had left their homelands of Italy, England and USA and arrived at Malvern to begin the first hospital and first mission of the Cabrini Sisters in Australia. After the arrival of the ten MSCs, 6 Sisters of Mercy stayed on at the hospital until the official hand over on 1 February 1948.

Thanks to their hard work and dedication, by 1958 a modern, multi story hospital replaced the much smaller Victorian building and proudly bore the name St Frances Xavier Cabrini Hospital, in honor of the foundress of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Their legacy still lives at Cabrini here today. Since the early 1990s, the Sisters have invited us to be partners in their work here in Australia. This was reiterated most recently at the Provincial Assembly in October 2009, where Sr Patricia Spillane MSC, Superior General, said simply: “we are called together for mission – in fact, mission is the only reason why we are here.”

We take the opportunity to pay special tribute to our “Founding Mothers” who travelled half way across the world to begin this mission in Australia and set the foundation for the large and complex health service we know today:

Mother Candida Antonietti - Mother Superior
Mother Tommasina Galimberti - Deputy Superior
Mother Bernadina Claudi - Matron
Mother Elizabeth Lawrence - Secretary
Mother Arcangela Donzelli - Operating theatre
Mother Alfonsa Frosi - Night nurse
Mother Benedetta Mereghetti - Nurse
Mother Erminia Bornaghi - Charge theatre nurse
Mother Eleonora Pelloni - in charge of the kitchen
Mother Mercedes Passoni - Nurse
