In their recent capital campaign, the parishioners of St. Finbar School in Burbank, California have demonstrated the faith and resolve of St. Frances Cabrini. Faced with the daunting task of raising $5 million dollars to construct a church hall, a gymnasium and two additional classrooms, the parishioners have met their goal, thanks in part to prayerful petitions to Mother Cabrini. How did this come to pass?
Missionary Sister Regina Palamara is a regular presence in the parish and in the parish school at St. Finbar, where she is a school volunteer and in outreach to seniors. It was Sr. Regina who suggested to the pastor, Father Albert Bahhuth, that he follow the lead of Mother Cabrini who once wrote a petition for financial aid on the open book on a statue of St. Anne when she needed funds for the construction of her hospitals. Sr. Regina suggested that Fr. Albert write the amount of $5 million dollars on an open book of a statue of Mother Cabrini. Sr. Regina assured Fr. Bahhuth that she would pray to Mother Cabrini for the successful completion of the campaign. Being a practical woman, Sr. Regina asked of the pastor, if I pray for you, what will you do for Mother Cabrini? After some thought, the pastor suggested that they could name one of the new meeting rooms, which will be used for the after school program, in honor of Mother Cabrini. The room will also be used for multi-purposes in the parish. And so, it is.
The St. Finbar Parish Council has just approved the dedication of the new classroom to Mother Cabrini.
Sr. Reginas faith filled energies in California are not directed to St. Finbar Parish alone. Each month she hosts a gathering of Cabrini Companions. hey come together to be prayerfully present for one another. This month, in observance of Lent, she prepared a meal of oatmeal, pita bread and served water out of tin cans so that the Companions could be in solidarity with the poor.
This monthly gathering of Companions and her connections with the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, the Knights of Columbus - Cabrini Branch, the Cabrini Literary Guild; and the Villa Cabrini Academy Alumni and Friends (VCAAF) help to revitalize and strengthen the Cabrinian presence in Southern California established by Mother Cabrini herself.
