From the time I first arrived, I was met by a warm and welcoming staff and by clients who were ready to extend their love and friendship to me. I have been so impressed to see all the good being done to assist today’s immigrants. People in need of legal immigration services, those desiring to learn English, and those seeking employment and other social services are welcomed. Soon after coming through our doors these people realize that they are in a special place where they can be comfortable. Before long they feel that they are part of the “family.”

Working along with Marianne McGowan who heads up our ESL program, has been a great experience. We have planned a series of workshops for a group of our Hispanic moms. These dealt with health care issues, providing a safe home environment and good nutrition. We consider New York City and special sites in Westchester as alternate classrooms that open up our students to the bigger world. What joy it is to see people from all over communicating and enjoying each others’ company! Beautiful relationships are formed while people practice speaking English.

I am so impressed by the generosity and dedication of our volunteer tutors. They take such pride in their students’ successes whether in becoming fluent in English, passing the citizenship test, or gaining employment. Many of them have remained friends over a period of several years.

I believe that Mother Cabrini’s spirit is very much at work, and that God has blessed us by providing us with an opportunity to serve today’s immigrants. I am grateful to God for allowing me to be a part of this very relevant ministry.
