Sr. Alberta Surico, MSC
With obvious delight in her voice, Sr. Alberta speaks of her ministry with immigrants as she teaches in the English as a Second Language program (ESL). Her students come to her through Cabrini Immigrant Services. “It is not only the language that we try to teach, but also sharing with them about the American way of life,” said Sr. Alberta recently.

Sr. Alberta has been involved in this program for about six years. Currently, she is working with two students, whom she sees on an individual basis for two hours a week. They have homework assignments which she reviews with them and then she will give them new assignments.

“They are so eager to learn,” observes Sr. Alberta. One of her current students is a woman from Bangladesh who is working diligently on her handwriting. With gentle coaching from Sr. Alberta, the woman has made significant progress. “Their faces radiate with joy when you tell them how much they have improved,” remarked Sister.

Sr. Alberta spoke also of a gentleman from China, an engineer, and an avid student. “I will assign a chapter of a book to read and he will have read the entire book. To show his appreciation he gave me a piece of art. They don’t know how to thank us enough. It’s been fun,” Sr. Alberta waxes enthusiastically. Clearly, Sr. Alberta looks forward to continuing this special collaboration with Cabrini Immigrant Services and towards developing on-going relationships with her immigrant students.
