2010 Lenten Reflections By Missionary Sisters - First Sunday of Lent - February 21st.

For each week in Lent, one of the Missionary Sisters will share a brief reflection. The reflection for the first week in Lent is by Sr. Eileen Currie, MSC.

Reflection for First Sunday in Lent – February 21, 2010

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. Luke 4:1

Living in a part of the country which is considered a semi-arid desert climate, one’s imagination is primed a bit for this gospel scene. The land here, when not snow covered, is a dull brown. Even the evergreens are lack luster at this time. Undoubtedly the creepy crawling things are still roaming and the wind still howls. The plain unadorned land offers a good environment for a Lenten journey. As in the Exodus story and the prophet Hosea, God tends to lure us into desert spaces, exterior and interior, so we can come to a deeper understanding of who we are and how ardently God longs for our loving friendship.

Luke links the Baptism of Jesus with the subsequent temptations. Perhaps Lent offers us time to consider our Baptismal promises, and how we are living them out in our choices and daily living. Each year we renew those promises “to renounce Satan, his works and his empty promises, so as to live in the freedom of God’s children.” The lure of pleasure, prestige and power may have different faces each year, but their names are always the same. The strength of those allurements is unending, but being lured by God is deeper, stronger, and always unfailing.

May this Lenten season bring us more deeply into the truth of who we are: the beloved of God.
